BarberBook – Mobile Booking App
BarberBook is a mobile-first platform that improves the barbershop experience for customers and owners. We aimed to create an easy-to-use system that addresses no-shows, double bookings, and management challenges.
This project was completed in the Spring 2024 semester at SAIT for a UX research course. Instead of developing a full mobile app, our team focused on identifying key problems through research. We applied various UX methods to suggest meaningful solutions. The project involved collaboration among Karl, Frian, Angelo M, Angelo B, and me.
Problem & Design Solution
Market research revealed that many barbershop clients want flexible, mobile booking options. Still, over half of current bookings occur via phone calls, leading to lost opportunities, double bookings, and unhappy customers.
BarberBook provides a hybrid solution with online scheduling and in-person flexibility. It also helps barbers manage appointments more effectively through a dashboard that tracks client histories, preferences, and availability. These features were designed based on real user needs identified during our research.
Research & Insights
Research activities included:
- Analyzing user reviews of booking platforms such as Booksy
- Interviewing barbershop owners about day-to-day pain points
- Synthesizing insights from surveys and team discussions
- Clients want to select specific barbers and preferred times
- Barbers need clarity around appointments and client preferences
- No-shows and cancellations are the leading source of revenue loss
- My Role
UX Designer – responsible for research analysis. - Team Collaboration
Worked with teammates on user research, feature planning, and product definition over four key sprints. This involved designing surveys, conducting interviews with barbers and clients, and analyzing the results for key insights. These findings guided our product roadmap and PRD (Product Requirements Document), outlining the app’s core features and user priorities. - Tools Used
Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Google Forms - Deliverables
Research synthesis, feature prioritization, persona development, visual mockups, GTM strategy
Takeaways
Our team learned how vital research is in UX design. We focused on surveys and interviews to understand users' experiences and challenges. Then, we analyzed the results to uncover real needs. Although we didn’t build an actual mobile app, our findings helped suggest key features and directions, forming the project's foundation.
